Studying the “Right” Can Feel Wrong:
Reflections on Researching Anti-LGBT Movements

Tina Fetner and Melanie Heath
Book Chapter Contribution in Other, Please Specify: Queer Methods in Sociology (2018)
(Book Editors: D’Lane Compton, Tey Meadow, and Kristen Schilt)

In “Studying the ‘Right’ Can Feel Wrong: Reflections on Researching Anti-LGBT Movements,” Tina Fetner and Melanie Heath discuss the specific challenges and emotional costs that can arise for queer and queer-supportive scholars who do research with groups that embrace a politics of disgust against LGBTQ+ people. Scholars have studied how conservative Christians who believe homosexuality to be a sin can be fundamentally intolerant and narrow-minded. These actors have mobilized resources and organized a massive social movement in opposition to lesbian and gay rights and in support of the social exclusion of trans people. This chapter is organized to follow particular concerns that the authors faced during the important steps of entering the field, collecting data, and analyzing findings. They reflect on the value of studying right-wing activism, and how to manage such research projects.

Keywords: right-wing politics, same-sex sexuality, qualitative methods
